Cardiff City vs Luton Town 11th March 2025: EFL Championship Preview and Prediction

Omer Riza’s Cardiff City are set to face relegation rivals Luton Town at the Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday night which appears to be a massive game at the bottom of the table. The Bluebirds sit in 21st on 36 points just four points ahead of their opponents who sit in 23rd.

A win for both sides is crucial, three points for the Bluebirds would see them eight points clear of Luton and potentially seven points clear of the bottom three. Luton may feel more pressure on this fixture as a win would see them sit only just two points behind the home side and potentially two points ahead of Derby, who they are yet to play.

Cardiff are coming into the game after narrow back to back defeats to Championship high-flyers Burnley and Sunderland. Performances have improved for the Bluebirds but draws to Bristol City and Plymouth may been seen as points dropped.

Cardiff’s Opposition

Luton have struggled all season, winning only just one game on the road which came against Millwall back in September. Rob Edwards lost his job in January after a miserable run of four straight losses, which saw former Wycombe Wanders boss Matt Bloomfield take over.

Since taking the new job Bloomfield has a win rate of 10% having won just once, against Portsmouth at Kenilworth Road. Luton will want to prove a point after suffering a 4-0 away defeat to promotion chasers Burnley last weekend. This means they have conceded eight goals in just five games.

Mark Mcguiness also had a week to forget as he put the ball into the back of his own net which gave Burnley the lead. The former bluebird played 49 games in a Cardiff shirt and returns for the first time to the Cardiff City Stadium since August.

Team News

Luton

Kai Naismith is suspended after being sent off for the Hatters last weekend. Tahith Chong, Tom Lockyer, Reece Burke, Teden Mengi, Marvelous Nakamba and Shandon Baptiste all remain doubts for the Hatters due to injury.

Cardiff

Meanwhile Cardiff will be without Ollie Tanner, Jak Alnwick, Jesper Daland and David Turnball due to injury. Yakou Meite, Joe Ralls and Andy Rinomhota all remain doubts.

Will Alves may return from illness.

Previous Meetings

The most recent fixture between the two teams saw Luton edge a 1-0 win at Kenilworth Road with Jacob Brown scoring in the 57th minute. Cardiff struggled to create any real big chances however, a point in the end would’ve been a fair result. Both sides have met 67 times in history with Luton winning 27 and Cardiff winning 23. Luton have won four of the last six meetings.

Prediction

It’s fair to say that most people watching the game will expect a tight game with not many goals being scored. Luton’s away form suggests that Cardiff have nothing to worry about however both teams have conceded 59 goals each which suggests the game could be extremely open.

I’d be leaning towards a Cardiff victory with my prediction being 1-0 to the home side. Callum Robinson and Rubin Colwill have provided the quality they have needed at crucial points this season and I expect them to shine throughout the 90 minutes.
