Interim Wales head coach Matt Sherratt praises fans despite record-breaking defeat to England

Interim Wales head coach Matt Sherratt was full of praise for Welsh fans and their support for his side throughout his time as head coach despite a record-breaking ten-try defeat to bitter rivals England.

England ran out 68-14 victors against Wales at the Principality to spur their Six Nations title hopes into the hands of a Scottish favour after schooling Wales with ten tries in a real men against boys super Saturday encounter.

Sherratt said “I'm very disappointed. There's no point in going into any detail. I'm more [Disappointed] for the players, if I'm honest. I've been in three, or four weeks, so it's not about me at all. There's a great group of lads in the dressing room, really good staff, good people, so I really feel for them.”

Sherratt who is returning to his post as head coach of Cardiff summed up how he and his team were feeling following the defeat “Listen, it was one of those days when it looked like a game. Too many didn't it? I think as well, we've got to be aware, that probably the last seven to eight weeks have been pretty emotional.

The playing group has been through a fair bit on the staff and little things went against us in the game today and it probably opened up some wounds. So we come up against a good England side and yeah, little things didn't go our way either.”

Sherratt was quick to turn any attention away from the state of the WRU after the game “Listen, I'm not going to get drawn on the state of Welsh Rugby bit. Over the last four weeks. it's important as well that I don't take today as my lasting memory. I've enjoyed the four weeks. There's a good group of lads. There has been some improvement.

It's difficult to say that today after, that loss, but I've probably gotta reflect on it and just look at the past four weeks in general. I'm not gonna get drawn on the state of Welsh Rugby. We know where we are, I think, and it's about moving forward in the next couple of weeks.”

Sherratt closed his addressing of the media by thanking his players for their efforts in his stint in charge “For the group and myself personally. I'd like to thank them for that. Even at the end when they're obviously hurting there's gonna be probably an emotional reaction.

The support they've given the team and myself over the past four weeks has been brilliant. The Twenties had a good win yesterday. I think there are some green shoots, but listen I think we knew where we were before this campaign started. That's not changed it's just about getting the next couple of appointments right and then trying to build a base for the game.”
