Middlesbrough v West Brom 21st January 2025: EFL Championship Preview

Tony Mowbray’s second stint as West Brom boss begins with a trip to former club Middlesbrough as they look to fend off their play-off chasing hosts on Tuesday evening at the Riverside.

Mowbray, who won the Championship title with the Baggies back in 2008, captained Boro in his playing days, registering 348 appearances before serving the club as manager between 2010 and 2013.

Michael Carrick’s side come into this game after falling to a 2-1 defeat to Portsmouth on the weekend, whereas West Brom salvaged a 1-1 draw versus Stoke in Chris Brunt’s last game in caretaker charge.

Previous Meeting

Middlesbrough had the upper hand in the reverse fixture back in October, as Hayden Hackney’s goal made the difference at The Hawthorns, culminating in a rare defeat for West Brom this season with draws being the outcome for most of their results this season.

Boro also came out on top in this fixture at the Riverside, winning 1-0 back in December 2023. The Albion came out on top the two occasions prior, registering two victories, although both were at home.

Wins are hard to come by for West Brom at Middlesbrough as it has been five years since a win on Teeside. Their last win coming in October 2019 as Hal Robson-Kanu scored late to give the Baggies three points.

That season West Brom won promotion back to the top-flight.
